Announcements ๐ข
It's been several weeks since we last published, and I've been antsy to get this back going again. For the most part I've been directing most of my time at UnderPar to working on data pipelines and the newsletter took a back seat. But...I've got some good pipelines running and doing what I need them to do. Currently I'm doing some quality control on the data they are producing, but they'll be ready soon. I'll have more on this later in the newsletter. Check out some of our other updates below:
๐ค Team Update: Ben Wattleworth has decided to leave UnderPar to pursue other opportunities, and we're excited to welcome Parker Goldman as he joins the UnderPar team. We wish Ben nothing but success in his next chapter and look forward to what Parker brings to our analytics platform.
๐ฎ Discord Server Launch: We're getting a Discord server up and running. This will be a great place for the community we're developing to communicate in real-time about golf media, analytics, and fantasy golf.
๐ง Beta Testing Opportunity: We're launching our positive equity platform in the next 3 to 4 weeks and looking for 3-5 people to beta test it. You'll get 2 months of free access to our arbitraged picks and early access to our new analysis tools.

Recapping The FedEx Cup Championship โณ
TPC Southwind in Memphis played at 7,288 yards this week as a par 70. Don't let this shorter course fool you, hit it in the rough and your cooked. TPC Southwind required accuracy and played as a straight ballers paradise this week.
This week featured newly renovated greens where all 18 complexes were completely rebuilt. The reno started in November of last year and also included resurfacing the tee boxes and improved fairway irrigation. It's the most extensive construction the course has seen in over two decades.
What an incredible fight to the finish by Justin Rose. He played the final 5 holes of the tournament -4 under par, and then held off J.J Spaun in an incredible playoff finish.

Where it mattered ๐ฏ
The playoff was magnificent golf and it really came down to who was going to make the first mistake in a clutch situation. Justin and J.J. seemingly willed their way through 3 playoff holes with some clutch shots. It seemed like groundhog day after both players birdied the 18th on their second go-around with J.J draining and 30+ footer for birdie, and Justin following it up by making a clutch 12 footer. On their third go at 18 they both hit great shots into a new pin location. Justin lined up and did what he had done all week, made putts. He knocked down his birdie forcing J.J. to respond. Spaun was closer, just 7 feet away, but had too much speed and played the ball too far outside the hole and missed giving Justin Rose the win.
Needless to say putting really mattered for Justin Rose. It kept him in the hunt and came in clutch down the stretch and in the playoff. He gained nearly a stroke on the field all week on the greens ranking him 7th in SG Putt. J.J ranked 45th in SG Putt, but got it done in other areas finishing ranked 3rd in SG Tee to Green.
METRIC | Justin Rose -16 | J.J. Spaun -16 |
---|---|---|
SG: PUTTING Strokes gained on the green | +0.93 | -0.21 |
SG: AROUND GREEN Strokes gained in short game | +0.22 | +0.92 |
SG: APPROACH Strokes gained on approach shots | +1.41 | +1.81 |
SG: OFF THE TEE Strokes gained on tee shots | +0.57 | +0.60 |
SG: TEE TO GREEN Combined T2G performance | +2.20 | +3.33 |
SG: TOTAL Overall strokes gained | +3.13 | +3.13 |
FINAL ROUND R4 score | -3 | -5 |
Cool stat โ๏ธ
At 45 years old, Justin Rose showed experience and clutch putting can still dominate when it matters most. Winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship moved him into 4th place in the FedEx Cup standings. Justin show composure down the stretch, birdying 4 of his last 5 holes to force a playoff, then continuing his hot streak by birdying 2 of the 3 playoff holes to seal the win. This win made Rose one of the oldest winners on Tour this year and proves that veterans can still keep up with the young bucks.
